Conditional

Conditional sentence এর ক্ষেত্রে verb formএর কিছু ব্যতিক্রম ঘটে। এই বাক্যগুলো চিনতে ভুল করলে ঐ verb formটাও সঠিকভাবে ধরা যায় না। মূলতঃ Conditional sentence হল দুটো ঘটনা যাদের মধ্যে একটা আরেকটার শর্ত। যেমনঃ
I will go if I have the time.
এখানে সময় থাকাটা শর্ত, আর যাওয়াটা হল মূল ঘটনা।
Conditional sentence দু’রকম, real আর unreal।

Real condition
 
বক্তা যদি বোঝাতে চায় যে শর্তটি বাস্তব, অর্থাৎ ঘটনাটি ঘটতেও পারে তাহলে সেটি real condition. তিনরকম real condition হতে পারেঃ
Future:
If+ subject+ present indefinite+ {will can may must} + verb base form
If he takes the bribe the police will arrest him.
Habitual:
If+ subject+ present indefinite+ ( ) + present indefinite
If the child finds candy he keeps quiet.
Optative:
If+ subject+ present indefinite+ ( ) + present indefinite
If you find him sleeping, wake him up.
 

Unreal condition
 
বক্তার কথাতেই যদি বোঝা যায় যে শর্তটি ঘটবার কোন সম্ভাবনা নেই তাহলে বাক্যটি একটি unreal condition। unreal condition দু’রকমঃ
Present/Future:
If + subject + simple past + {would could might} + verb base form
If he took the bribe the police would arrest him.
উপরের real future conditionএর সাথে তুলনা করে দেখুন, verbদুটো আলাদা। এর অর্থ হল বক্তার বিশ্বাস এই লোকটি ঘুষ নেবে না ।
Past:
If + subject + past perfect + ( ) + {would could might} + have + past participle of verb
If he had taken the bribe the police would have arrested him.
অথবা আরেকটি উদাহরণ হতে পারেঃ
If he had not taken the bribe the police would not have arrested him.
 
যার অর্থ হল লোকটি ইতোমধ্যে ঘুষ নিয়েছে । তাই if  দিয়ে যে শর্তটি দেয়া হয়েছে সেটি অবাস্তব।
